Kayak Instruction

Adventure Sports of Arlington offers instruction at several beginner to intermediate levels in the Washington, D.C. area. We'll work with you to determine the course that meets your interests, skills, athletic ability, and comfort in a kayak. We will also teach standard ACA flatwater, moving water, and whitewater kayaking courses.

Instruction is free for teachers and all others with a demonstrated interest in the public good, especially if you pledge to join the Potomac Conservancy.

Kids Programs

Weekday afternoons

From 1 to 10 students

Lowest student/instructor ratios

Quick Start to Kayaking (best for 1 to 3 persons)

usually 2 to 4 hours

medium to high intensity

focus on strokes, safety and self-rescue

moving water to whitewater based on ability and interest

Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking (best for 3 to 5 persons)

usually 5 hours

low intensity to increasing difficulty throughout the day

focus on strokes, safety and self-rescue on flat water and moving water

moving water to whitewater based on ability and interest

Guided Whitewater Trips

Adventure Sports of Arlington will accompany you on any of the rivers listed below, usually at no charge:

North Branch at Barnum during scheduled dam releases - Class 2-3;

Violets Lock (main section or GW Powtomack Canal) - Class 2;

All nine major rapids on the below Great Falls:

O-deck at Great Falls Virginia; - Class 3-4

Fishladder Rapid; Class 3

S-Turn (put-in at Great Falls, MD or VA); Class 3-4

Rocky Island Rapid; Class 3

Wet-Bottom Chute; Class 3

Difficult Run Rapid (all three chutes) - Class 2-3

Yellow Falls - Class 2-3

Stubblefield Falls - Class 2-3

Little Falls - Class 3-4,5

Currently we are teaching only higher level SCUBA courses and refresher courses. For Basic Open Water SCUBA certification, we highly recommend the following (alphabetical order):
